Photographing red-crowned cranes
on Otowa Bridge, Tsurui Village
Capture this beautiful Natural Monument as it flies elegantly from its roost
Red-crowned cranes roost by the Setsuri River, as it is a water source that does not freeze in winter. On winter mornings, when the temperature reaches -20°C, steam rises from the river and white frost flowers cover the trees. These magical conditions are the backdrop of the red-crowned cranes' morning flight to their feeding ground, and the sight is so wondrous that photographers line up on Otowa Bridge to get a shot. Wait on the bridge and you might even see a crane flying right overhead.

To predict when you’ll see them, you’ll need to know the day’s temperature and weather, as well as the conditions on the previous couple of days. Time it right and you’ll be able to enjoy an amazing moment!
